I was headed to work around 3:30 in the morning. I'm a police officer. My work day starts at 4:30, and as I was heading down Interstate 4 a local business truck came up behind me and rear-ended me. I went for a roll down I-4. Thank God I had my helmet on. The injuries were pretty overwhelming at that point.
I had broken both ankles, one wrist, opened up both my knees to where they had to be surgically closed up again. It was quite an accident. I'm lucky to be alive. I kept the helmet. My father contacted the Chanfraus. They'd handled a case for him before. And they met me at the hospital, very polite about it. What helped me a lot is that they assigned a person to me, Amanda, I still remember her name. And she'd check in with me, we'd stay in contact over email.
They encouraged me, you know, "Hey, it's your job to get better. It's our job to take care of the legal aspect." I can't express enough how much it's good to have somebody on your side who's been through this a couple of times, who isn't seeing this through your clouded first-person perspective. I mean, you're focused on your recovery, you're focused on getting better. You do not see the big picture when you're recovering from an accident like that. You don't understand as just the person recovering in a hospital what a lifelong injury means and what the appropriate compensation for that is.
If a guy from their insurance company had busted through the hospital room door, before they had seen me, and offered me a tenth of the amount that I ended up settling for, I'd have signed at the line and have hurt myself badly in the long term.
The best representation that I've ever had ever was through Chanfrau & Chanfrau and how they handle it, how they assign you somebody to work with you, somebody that answers your emails, somebody that answers your questions, somebody that talks you through the hard parts of recovery. I'd recommend them to anybody.
