Roundabouts Address Dangerous Intersections in DeLand
Roundabouts are an effective traffic device that can lessen the number and severity of crashes for both cars and motorcycles at dangerous intersections. With traffic moving in a single direction, the potential of angle and T-bone collisions is virtually eliminated, improving safety for riders on motorcycles. Roundabouts also force traffic to slow in order to merge, and updated intersections have been shown promising improvements.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has implemented plans throughout Volusia County to retrofit many dangerous intersections with roundabouts, which can only benefit motorcyclists. Current and future plans for roundabouts in DeLand include:
Grand Avenue and
State Road 44
The intersection on the west side of town at Grand Avenue and State Road 44 used to be one of the most dangerous in DeLand. From 2011 to 2015, there were 33 crashes at this single intersection. Following the tragic death of a grandmother and her three grandchildren at the intersection in 2016, the FDOT retooled the intersection to include a roundabout. Only the second roundabout in Volusia County when completed, the new intersection was met with skepticism but has since proved to be effective at calming traffic in the area.
Kepler Road and
State Road 44
As residents of DeLand have become used to navigating roundabouts, opposition to their construction at known problem intersections has decreased significantly. The latest planned intersection to receive a roundabout is on the east side of DeLand at Kepler Road and SR-44. Between 2011 and 2015, the FDOT reported 81 accidents, and from August 2016 to August 2020, there were 106 accidents. While none were fatal, some did result in significant injuries. The project aims to change the junction to a continuous-flow roundabout to improve safety.
