Dangerous Intersections Around Bunnell Roundabouts to Help Improve Safety
When the roads around Bunnell were originally constructed, there were far fewer drivers on the road. As the population in central Florida has grown over the last few decades, the number of vehicles on the road has increased and revealed a number of unsafe intersections. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has adapted in order to increase driver safety by constructing roundabouts as traffic calming devices. Roundabouts are effective because they virtually eliminate T-bone and angle collisions since traffic is always moving in a single direction. Old Dixie and U.S. Route 1
In recent years, this has been one of the deadliest intersections in the Greater Bunnell area. During 2017 alone, six people were killed at the intersection at Old Dixie and U.S. Route 1. Five lost their lives in a three-vehicle accident in February and a motorcyclist lost his life when he collided with a semi-truck in November. Although initially met with criticism by local residents, roundabouts have been shown to significantly reduce fatal accidents by 90 percent and crashes resulting in injuries by 68 percent.
U.S. Route 1 at Matanzas Woods Parkway
Another dangerous intersection in Bunnell, U.S. Route 1 at Matanzas Woods Parkway was the scene of a terrible accident during the 2018 edition of Daytona Bike Week that left three bikers hospitalized when a driver plowed into their motorcycles. A number of deadly car and motorcycle accidents have occurred at this intersection over the years, prompting the need for authorities to construct a roundabout in order to lower the risks to drivers in the area.
